1)Rank the ions below in order of decreasing size
Sr^2+, Ba^2+, Cs^1+
2) In which atom do the outermost electrons experience the weakest effective nuclear charge?
N, C, O, F, or Be?
Need quick chemistry help?
1) Cs, Ba, Sr
2) Be
Reply:I explained to you why it works damn it
Now I really know how teachers feel when they teach... students not trying to understand
JESUS CHRIST Report It
Reply:I don't know how the first guy/gal got his/her answer but that's completely wrong... the correct order is Cs1+ %26gt; Ba2+ %26gt; Sr2+
Think about it. Cs+1 has a weaker effective nuclear charge than Ba2+, thought they both have n=6. And Sr2+ only has n=5, meaning it's gonna be smaller logically.
Oh but I don't think you really understand what effective nuclear charge is...
I mean, I'm not going to give away the answer for 2), but just think about it. A nucleus with more protons is going to have a stronger effective nuclear charge because more protons means stronger attraction for the electrons.
Edit: oh well too bad the guy before has an answer for you. This is why I really hate Yahoo answers sometimes...
but do you really understand why those are the right answers?
Sr, Cs, Ba
2)
not so sure about this one.
