Ok, So I Want To Start Taking Birth Control But How Long Does It Take To Become Effective?

Well , I want to start taking birth control b/c I don't want a(n) period during a vacation. I need to know how soon it will start working....as soon as I take it? Or do I have to wait a week or more? B/c I don't know when I am going to start, but I do want to make sure I don't start during or before the trip. Can anybody help?!?! [[or does anybody have any other possible options instead of the pill?]] [[b/c i have heard of a shot but idk]]

It doesn't just stop your period as soon as you pop a pill. You have to plan to "rearrange" your cycle at least 3 weeks in advance or you're risking all sorts of break through bleeding. Plus, if you just start taking the pill, the probability of using pills to change your cycle within the first 3 months is pretty low. You need to be on them for at least 4 months to be able to do this reliably. You also must have a full gynecological evaluation before you can be prescribed birth control pills. I'm not sure how far away your vacation is, but I don't think this is something you can do quickly. It takes more than just a trip to the pharmacy.

Anyway though, to "skip a period" on birth control pills, you are essentially taking 2 months worth of "Active" pills in a row (6 weeks), instead of the 3 weeks of "Active" and 1 week of "Reminder pills" (which is when you would get your period). x
Reply:One month to be on the safe side.
Reply:if you are taking pills, it will probably take until the second month to be able to stop your period. usually the first month, even if you take straight through, you will have at least a day or two.

if you get the depo shot, your period may be stopped from that point on for the next 3 months but then some people get a period after their first shot and it LASTS for weeks.

it all depends on your body.
Reply:as soon as you start taking it
Reply:You are suppose to start taking the period the sunday after your next period. Even if it starts on Saturday. It might not help you over your holiday, but, if you have a period before you go, then perhaps it will. The shot won't stop it either in time.

There is a device for periods,so you don't have a string or have to wear a pad, check out your local pharmacy, not the big ones, like super stores, try CVS or something like that. Its just alittle rubber ring type that has a bit of rubber in the middle to prevent any break through bleeding.

Good luck
