What happens, do you think, if America retreats from Iraq as many Democrats are politicizing for?

Clifford May offers in Imagining Defeat, What happen if America retreats from Iraq? 26 Jul 2007, "For the sake of argument, imagine that opponents of the war in Iraq are right. Suppose that our military — designed to confront a different enemy, on a different battlefield, in a different era — has met its match. Suppose that the war against al Qaeda in Iraq, as well as against various Iranian-backed Shia militias, can not be won, and that staying on in Iraq can do nothing to protect America’s vital national-security interests."

"If that’s true, we must prepare for defeat in Afghanistan as well. There is no reason to believe that the strategy being used against us in Iraq will be less effective 1,400 miles further east." (C May)

What do you think? Or can someone provide what so many Democrats have assessed would happen after a retreat from Iraq and Afghanistan?

What happens, do you think, if America retreats from Iraq as many Democrats are politicizing for?
Well first off I don't think we should have went to Iraq in the first place but we are there now.

When we leave - if the place is still in chaos - everybody who took us at our word and tried to be out friend is going to get it in the neck.

When we left Nam lots of people went to reeducation camps - lots more just got whacked. Iraq is going to be a lot worse. The public knows just who was in the army - the police - and the government. If the place falls apart they are going to be very lucky just to get the reeducation camp.

Plus if we don't pull out in an orderly manner we are going to have to leave half our crap burning in the desert.
Reply:the main forces in Iraq today are the Iranian backed militias, they Sunni alqida backed militias and the foreign occupation forces. the elected Iraqi government already has close ties with Iran. sure the USA led invasion of Iraq is highly controversial and ma by unnecessary but right now the us has to take some hard decisions either they stay in Iraq and face the resulting division in the us community or retreat and the result in this case would be an all out civil war in Iraq which would certainly lead to Iraq becoming under Iranian influence because it has a shiat majority. thus, America's worst enemy today will become stronger than it has every been. therefor, it is the choice between staying and losing more and more men every day or leaving and having to face a much tougher enemy tomorrow. so the us will face some serious losses either way
Reply:May deliberately mischaracterizes the nature of the Democrats' opposition. This is called 'begging the question'. He also creates a -false dichotomy- by suggesting there are only two alternatives.

I think it's clear to most of us what what we're doing in Iraq is just not working. If the Bush admin. wants to win, it's up to them to back off, to come up with a new plan. But they don't, do they? They only keep insisting that we -are- winning, that we are making progress. No wonder they have no credibility.

Any capable manager should be able to discern that a program isn't working, to pull back and reconsider, and to try something different. Bush's plan seems to be simply to keep the war going until the Democrats take it out of his hands, so he can blame them for our defeat.
Reply:Obviously when the US gave up on fighting Communists in Korea and Vietnam, the Communists invaded America - is this not historical fact?
Reply:not only dems my friend, many wise people feel that way. what happens is that a lot of people will live, a lot of money will be saved, and maybe something beneficial will be done in this country.
Reply:70% of the country wants to leave Iraq so they are not all liberals. I haven't heard anybody say they wanted to leave Afghanistan. Iraq is in a civil war. About 1% of these people are Al Qaida. How can we be defeated in another country's civil war? Should the Brittish have come and stopped our civil war? How would they have done that?
Reply:We are going leave, we always were going to eventually leave, and whenever we leave (or left) all that we would have accomplished is creating a huge and dangerous mess.

All anyone had to do was read the book Bush’s father wrote in 1998 (‘A World Transformed’). In it, he - Bush the Wiser - explains why invading Iraq and removing Hussein from power would:

1.result in America becoming stuck in a no-win Vietnam-like quagmire;

2.result in America losing its friends and allies;

3.result in America losing its standing in the world and its ability to lead and influence international political events;

4.result in jeopardizing America’s own interests in the Middle East, undoing decades of intense effort to put ourselves in a position to be politically effective in the region;

5.result in increased hardship for both those who live in the Middle East and America’s own citizens; and

6.further destabilize the already volatile region with the possibility of causing regional (or greater) armed conflict.

If Bush had listened to his real father instead of the imaginary one he hears in his head we would not be in this mess.

dr. ibrahimi—

The head of the CIA recently listed – in order – the sources of the current violence in Iraq.

They are:

1.) the insurgency

2.) sectarian strife

3.) criminality

4.) general anarchy

5.) al-Qaeda

Al-Qaeda ranks below everyday riff-raff (criminality and general anarchy) as a source of violence in Iraq. Ignoring ther fact that Bush is lying (continuing his 6-year-long historical pattern of lying) his butt off about the situation in Iraq, the fact that he is hung-up on the factor least responsible for the problem might partially explain why every decision he makes leads to another failure.
Reply:If we pull out of Iraq with out defeating the terrorists. they will follow us home. Not that they arent already here. But it will get worse. I would rather fight them there than here.
Reply:I really don't think anyone knows what will happen over there when the US pulls out but in reality peace will never happen in the middle east. When they run out of oil or we dont need it anymore they will become another Africa, full of poverty, death and starvation
