How many days do you really have to take the pill before it is effective?

I've started a new pill after having a week and half break from a mini pill.

I started it on Thursday and my bf and I had sex last night but he didn't c*m.

I've heard different things from different people and on different sites about 4 days, 7 days, 28 days etc.

When I went on Microgynon 30, I was told 7 days.

Im now on Cilest which is similar (combined pill). When we had sex I had just taken my 5th pill.

Close enough to avoid pregnancy if it is 7 days?

How many days do you really have to take the pill before it is effective?
Usually, it is suggested that you use alternative protection as well as your pill, for 28 days, i.e. a complete cycle (including your period), to be on the safe side. It's quite some time since I was on the pill; and old bag like me doesn't need to now! (I'm in my 40's, thank you very much.......), but it's always better to be safe than sorry!

Your partner hasn't actually got to "c..e" for you to get pregnant either; some fluids are released, (and I'm trying to be very diplomatic and polite here; they'd ban me from this site if I put in writing how I'd normally say it!), prior to actual ejaculation, and they do contain sperm! Sperms, ovaries, eggs; hello, BABIES! That is why the "Withdrawal Method" of contraception is not a good idea! Ask any families whose religeous beliefs etc., prevent them using any other form of birth control, why most of them have such large families!!!!!

Until you are sure of your new pill etc., the best forms of contraception are either keeping your legs crossed; telling him no or not bloody likely, or, failing that, cooling his ardour (and that is said "tongue in cheek"), with a slap, (but not too hard), on his "bits"!

I may be in my 40's, but, yes, I've still got a good s.x life (without the worries of babies appearing), and, hopefully, a good sense of humour whilst being able to advise or help someone if I can.

Try not to worry too much; you'll probably be ok, but, you can't really throw caution to the wind when there is the possiblity of another life being involved!

Reply:My obgyn stands by "thirty days of perfect pill." That is taking the pill for thirty days exactly how you are supposed to take it for it to be 99% effective. Some say one week, but she told me that after a week of "perfect pill" it's really only 70% effective. That is, 3 out of 10 women who have unprotected sex after the first week of taking the pill will become pregnant. Not a statistic I want to risk being.

Remember if you miss a pill after the first month you need to use another backup method of birth control for a week. That is missing one all together, and being over twelve hours late with it. If you are twelve hours (or later) taking it, consider it a missed pill and use backup for a week.

If you are up to twelve hours late taking it, you need to use a backup method for three days.

No exceptions because taking the pill late or missing a pill considerably drops the effectiveness and you are at high risk for unintended pregnancy.

Anyway, wait a month and take your pills correctly and you will be fine.

Good luck!
Reply:I'm on cilest, you need to take it for at least 7 days before you are protected! My doctor told me 7 days. So if you took it on your 5th day.. then you're not protected. It doesn't matter if it's NEAR 7 days, you haven't been taking it for more than 7 days, so you aren't protected. You need to give your body time to get used to the pill. I don't want to scare you or anything, I'm just giving you the facts.

Oh and even though your boyfriend didnt ejaculate, there is still a chance of pregnancy. Even though you are on the pill, it is always advised to also use a condom for double protection.
Reply:Lots of people say 7 days, but it's best if you wait an entire cycle to be sure. Even if you do, you're not completely safe. Tell your bf to buy some rainjackets if his little man wants to come out and play.
