Java and C++ are object oriented languages so they would be the better ones. It depends on what the project is Java is way better for online stuff. C++ is really good for offline stuff but is still capable of online things but is harder. I would recomend C++ if you are new to object oriented programming, in the end just look at some examples of them and see which one you like better.
Reply:Simple Java - Simple C/C++ No such thing. Both take time. The Java could be easier but because they both derive from C? C what I mean?

A project that involves writing data to a file, retrieves, edits, and allow for updates would cover all the basic necessary events an instructor would look for. Including the business approach of say a small order entry application should provide ur backdrop to the application.
Reply:Very cool project, and not that hard, that you could do in either java or c++:

A tiny webserver. It would not have to support anything, just accept basics like the http GET and output pages (text files) and images. No need to support multiple sessions, scripting languages or anything else. You will want error handliing and timeouts though.

Demonstrates networking, interactions between programs, error handling (don't forget the 404 page), and following real-world specs.
