a. new pest populations invade the area.
b. the chemicals induce mutations that convey immunity.
c. the chemicals mutate.
d. the pests learn to go around the chemicals.
e. those pests that have mutations that let them survive the pesticide, reproduce and form a pesticide –resistant population
96. Biological fitness is measured by how many offspring an individual contributes to successive generations relative to other members of the same population. Which of the following individuals is most fit evolutionarily?
a. someone with enormous wealth and the best medical treatments
b. someone with great physical strength and stamina
c. someone with extensive education
d. someone who is a good fighter
e. someone with many children and grandchildren
98. Most commercial pesticides are effective for only 2-3 years. This is because?
98. E - evolution in action.
96. E - if youve got lots of kids, you pass on more genes. lesson : if you want evolution to remember you, get humpin ;)
Reply:Looks like someone wants us to do their homework for them, instead of reading. Such a shame - the point of homework is to learn how to learn, not to get the answers right. Sigh, well who am I to fight apathetic students.
98. Could be a, b, or e (but its more likely that the pesticides degrade in strength and are no longer viable)
96. e
Reply:98 is "e". Most incests have a short life span and in short time can produce offsring which are many generations with genetic mutations which are immune to the original pesticide.
96 is "e". The question gives it away by stating "how many offspring" means biological fitness= someone with many children and grandchildren.
Reply:98. E. There are genetic variations within the pest population, and the ones that can survive the pesticide will eventually reproduce to form a new pesticide-resistant population. They have a short generation timespan and the entire population can become resistant in a relatively short period of time.
96. E. The question answered itself. A person with many children and grandchildren is biologically fit because of his/her many offsprings.
Reply:The closest correct answer would be "c". Actual resistance to pesticides is not all that common, especially with the newer generations of compounds that are used in agriculture and professional applicators. All pesticides degrade over time, they may be affected by UV light, water and temperature but over time the become biologically inactive and frankly are designed to do so as not to become persistant in the environment as did DDT and other cyclodienes.
