I live in Las Vegas and I was thinking of getting portable swamp cooler to supplement my A/C. I figure I could use the cooler in the room that I'm in so that I could keep my thermostat set at a higher temperature. I know that the larger swamp coolers do a pretty good job at cooling, but I'm not too sure about the portable ones. Anyone know of any good portable ones?
Is a swamp cooler all that effective?
They can be pretty effective but there may be a problem when you try to isolate one room and still run the AC.
The swap cooler is adding extra moisture the air and the AC is trying to take it out. You will need to really close off the air supply and return to the AC from that room and seal the door pretty tight.
Reply:Swamp coolers are very effective if the outside air is dry, as it would be in Las Vegas. However, you should never run a swamp cooler and a refrigerated air conditioner in the same building. You will frost up your A/C quickly and the swamp cooler will push all the cooled A/C air back outside almost immediately. Use one or the other but never both together.
